Early Years – Tackling the new ELGs

OK, so I realised I could put it off no longer… it was time to crack open the EYFS Profile Handbook once again and see if I could make better sense of it.

I’m not sure what has changed, (probably just the pressure of so many requests from our lovely community for some useful resources to support assessment in early years) but something clicked and I could finally see past the waffle and started to draft and design some beneficial resources that I hope will make EYFS assessment that little bit easier.

The Plan…

As well as updating the old EYFS profile assessment packs, I also wanted to delve a little deeper this time, creating resources you could share with parents, refer to in the classroom when carrying out observations and also expanding the packs to cover birth right through to 60 months.

Last night I shared the first of many resources that cover the new Early Learning Goals and it went down a storm.
These EYFS ELG posters cover all 17 goals but are broken down into smaller chunks, to make them easier to understand and observe.

I have also created them using child friendly language, in the hope that they can be shared with parents. I personally prefer them as a reference for assessment too, as I still feel the handbook goals contain a lot of information that can be easily misinterpreted – so I hope they offer some clarity.

What to expect…

So here’s a quick run down of what to expect over the next few weeks:

– Birth to 60+ months record booklet
EYFS profile booklet
EYFS ELG stickers
– Early Learning Goal hexagons for display
Early Learning Goal Posters
– Early Learning Goal booklet
Characteristics of Effective Learning Posters
– Characteristics of Effective Learning display
Characteristics of Effective Learning booklet
Characteristics of Effective Learning stickers

I really hope you find the resources useful and as always, if there is something you’d like to see made available regarding EYFS assessment, please get in touch and I will see what I can do.

  1. Thank you very much. xxxx

  2. Thank you, I love this resource. I downloaded it last night. Unfortunately I’m having problems doing anything else with it. Where it says open with it does nothing when I press it. I have an iPhone 5. What am I doing wrong? Sorry not the most technical person

    • Hi Sam

When you select open with, you then need to choose a piece of software or app to open it in. If there are no apps to choose from, it is because you haven’t bought or downloaded any from the app store. Download Adobe Reader, then you’ll be able to open the resources in that.

This information is also on the ‘Help and Support’ page found on the app ๐Ÿ™‚

  3. Brilliant resource – thankyou!
